Sharabeshwara Hotel is a family-run endeavour that was established in 1993 by HM Basavarajiah and his mother HM Parvathamma in the heart of Davangere. The hotel evolved from a small mess called Veerbhadreshwara Hotel, run by HM Basavarajiah’s father, HM Shivappaiah from ‘76 till his demise in ‘89.
The hotel celebrates the khanavali cuisine that is synonymous with North Karnataka and Jawari culture. The menu highlights the ingredients that are native to the region and ingrained in the culture. Ragi, gurellu (niger seeds), agasi pudi (flax seeds), Byadagi menshinikayi (red chilis) are just some of the examples of the products highlighted. The hotel has been home to authentic home-style khanavali meals since its inception. The recipes are the creation of HB Bharathi, HM Basavaraj’s wife. While there is no designated ‘head chef’, she is personally responsible for the flavour and the quality of every dish that is part of the hotel’s menu.
There are 4 types of meals - three of which are hearty savoury meals. The fourth is a moreish holige meal for anyone with a sweet tooth. A meal typically features jowar roti, a curry made with seasonal vegetables, at least two varieties of chutneys and podis, flavoured rice, and ragi malt. The all-in-one masala, the recipe for which is a family secret, is used in the preparation of several of the food items and greatly enhances the flavour of each dish.
Sharabeshwara Hotel is built on two pillars - the first being its comforting, delicious home-style meals, and the second being the customers. Several of the customers have been frequenting the hotel since its founding days, and are an extension of the Sharabeshwara family. “We feel like this is our home,” is a sentiment that is often expressed to the hotel staff. We pride ourselves on our hospitality and ensure that everyone who visits the hotel leaves with a full stomach and heart.
Sustainable dining is at the core of the hotel’s vision for the future. From fully biodegradable packaging to minimizing food wastage, the road ahead prioritizes an environmental-conscious approach. The family is also looking to spread awareness about khanavali cuisine far and wide. Suggi Oota, founded by H.B Shivaranjini in 2014 in San Jose, USA, is a prime example of this. Our goal is also to deliver the Sharabeshwara in-hotel experience to our customers’ doorsteps through our MealBoxes and wide range of homemade food products. We aim to continue creating and promoting authentic khanavali food and giving everyone a wholesome experience in our journey ahead as well.
